Michael W. Warren, Ph.D., D-ABFA
Dr. Michael Warren is currently an Associate Professor and Director of the C.A. Pound Human Identification Laboratory in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Florida in Gainesville. He received his Masters and Ph.D. in anthropology at the University of Florida under the mentorship of the late William Maples. He has joint appointments in the Department of Pathology, Immunology and Laboratory Medicine and is a founding affiliate of the William R. Maples Center for Forensic Medicine at UF.
Dr. Warren is a Fellow and past Chair of the Physical Anthropology section of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences. He is board-certified by the American Board of Forensic Anthropology and is currently serving on the Board. In addition, he is active as a board member of the Scientific Working Group for Forensic Anthropology, co-sponsored by the FBI and the Department of Defense, which is working to establish best practices for the discipline.
Dr. Warren’s research interests include human identification, human morphological variation, and the analysis of skeletal trauma. He has co-authored or co-edited two books on forensic anthropology, and has published numerous journal articles. He is perhaps the most widely published author on the scientific analysis of human cremated remains.
Dr. Warren has conducted hundreds of forensic osteological analyses for Florida’s medical examiners, and has participated in the identification of victims of mass disasters and ethnic cleansing, including the attacks on the World Trade Center, Hurricane Katrina, and the recovery and identification of the victims found within the mass graves of the Balkans. Many of the state’s Medical Examiners will recognize Dr. Warren as an annual lecturer at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology’s Forensic Anthropology course.

The mission of the District 5 Medical Examiner's Office is to fulfill the community needs outlined in FL Statutes (Sec 406), and to be of service to families of the deceased and to government agencies in the counties falling under the jurisdiction of Florida District 5 in death investigations.
